除了讲述好玩的主题外,吐温也把他们写下来。1873年时,吐温发行了一本名为「镀金时代」 (The Gilded Age) 的书,此书旨在讽刺当时的富人们("gilded"意指被金子覆盖)。讽刺小说是一种取笑人类恶习 (如:挥霍) 的文学作品。吐温以过度富裕使读者发笑。


Besides speaking on amusing subjects, Twain also wrote about them. In 1873, Twain released a book called The Gilded Age. The book was a satire of the very wealthy people of the time ("gilded" means covered in gold). A satire is a kind of work that makes fun of human vices, such as lavish spending. Twain made people laugh at the excesses of the rich.
