欧,船长!我的船长!我们可怕的航程已经终了,

港口就在前面,我已听见钟声,听到了人们的欢呼,
千万只眼睛都在望着我们的船安稳前进,它是那样威严和勇敢;
可是,欧,心啊!心啊!心啊!
啊,鲜红的血滴,
就在那甲板上,我的船长躺下了,
他已浑身冰冷,心脏停止了跳动。

惠特曼在内战即将退出之际写下这首诗,主要目的在于表达他对林肯总统遭到刺杀的反应。他的诗作很受欢迎,也因为如此,他常被要求要引用这些诗文,所以他总是说「我很后悔我写了这些…..。」

O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

Whitman wrote the poem in response to the assassination of the president just as the Civil War was coming to an end. His poem was so popular, and he was requested to recite it so often, that he said, "I'm almost sorry I ever wrote [it] . . ."
