情人节 (Valentine’s Day) ：2月14日

浪漫与瓦伦泰日联想在一起的主要原因，可能是来自一个中古世纪的传说：鸟儿会在2月14日这天选择自己的伴侣。在中古世纪期间，情侣会在这一天被送情诗或感性的文章给心爱的另一半听，以荣耀这浪漫的一天。威廉．莎士比亚 (William Shakespeare) 就曾写过一首14行诗能不能让我来把你比拟做夏日 (Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?) 而诗人伊莉莎白．巴瑞特 (Elizabeth Barrett) 也曾如此表达爱情：

我以什么方式爱你呢；让我细说从头。

我是如此爱你，我的灵魂能飞往多深、多远、多高的地方，我的爱依然跟随。

The romance we associate with Valentine's Day may spring from the medieval belief that birds select their mates on February 14th. During the Middle Ages, human lovebirds recited verse or prose to one another in honor of the day. "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?" wrote William Shakespeare. And poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning expressed love this way:

How do I love thee; let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach. . .
